Charleston County Park and MUSC are partnering for month of May

http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/adventureout/

Adventure Out: Turning Over a New Leaf

Adventure Out is a month-long outdoor fitness campaign to encourage residents to visit county parks for exercise. Exercising outdoors or “green exercise” has many additional benefits to indoor fitness activities, including stress management, improved self-esteem and mood, increased frequency of exercise, and improved sense of well-being.

For the month of May, the best fitness instructors at MUSC Wellness Center will pair up with the prettiest landscapes in Charleston County parks to entice you to get moving in the great outdoors. The Adventure Out program features more than 25 offerings, including aqua, Zumba dance, yoga and martial arts to help you turn over a new leaf and discover the benefits of green exercise.

When: The whole month of May – more than 25 free fitness activities to pick from with the purchase of an Adventure Out T-shirt ($10). Classes include sunrise yoga, beach sculpting, family games, Tae Bo, interval conditioning classes, trail running lessons and more. The T-shirt also gives you free park admission when attending a class.

Where: Offered in Charleston County parks (James Island, Palmetto Island, Wannamaker, Folly Beach Pier, IOP Beach Park)

MUSC Adventure Out Launch Party: May 1st from 11am - 1pm at the North Garden behind Drug Discovery (next to the Urban Farm) – food trucks, fitness class mini-sessions, Climbing Wall and more!

Adventure Out Family Fitness Day: The kickoff event will be May 4, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. - at James Island County Park (Wappoo Pavilion and Stage) with food trucks, jump castles, Zumba, family fun fitness games and more.

How: Purchase t-shirts at multiple locations and events. Click here for details.

Why: Because research shows outdoor or ‘green exercise’ delivers powerful health benefits and the Medical University of South Carolina and the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission want to make it easier for you to use the outdoors to be healthier.

Plantations (2/5/2013)

Our company is part of an internet base of over 37 million subscribers,
mostly US/Canada based. This online technology allows us the
ability to present our subscribers with a first choice when they look
for anything on any of the major search engines.

We're looking for a preferred source to send our users searching
for plantations in Charleston and surrounding markets.

I'm in the office weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Pacific time.

Crime Prevention Booklet
Crime Prevention Tips
Residential Survey
Personal Safety
Burglary Prevention
Video Camera Use

Please take some time to read the attached documents.  You should print them and do some homework on these.  Please pay special attention to the document Titled "Crime Prevention Tips"  especially the part on alarms, securing your home. etc.  Also the third document is titled Residential Survey.  Print this and do a survey of your home.  Where ever you marked NO...this in an area you need improvement.  Feel free to pass this on to neighbors.
Things your BURGLAR WON'T TELL YOU
1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.
 3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.
4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it..
5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.
6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.
7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.
8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door - understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.
9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)
10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.
11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.
13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system . If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at www.faketv.com
14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.
15. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.
16.  I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again.. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.
17. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?
18. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.
19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address
 20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.
21. If you don't answer when I knock, I'll try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Please clean up after your pets!

To All Nelliefield Plantation Residents:

As a reminder, please be courteous to your neighbors and pick up after your pet.

If you aren't at risk of stepping in dog poop, why should you care? There are both health and environmental reasons to pick up dog or cat waste and place it in a specific type of composting container or a garbage can, where it will be taken away to a dump where runoff is controlled.

Pet excreta carries bacteria, viruses and parasites that could infect other domestic pets as well as wildlife and humans. Roundworms are deposited in infected animal's feces, where they become infective to children who play in the sand or dirt. If a child ingests an infective egg, the larvae could migrate to their eyes and cause blindness. This is why we deworm puppies and kittens every two to three weeks when they are young, as young animals are the No. 1 carrier of this parasite.

Toxoplasmosis results from a parasite carried in cat waste. If a woman in her first trimester of pregnancy ingests an infective organism, it could cause birth defects in the baby. Most woman are infected from their own gardens.

Contrary to what you might think, pet feces does not make good fertilizer. It actually burns and discolors your lawn, so don't use that excuse to leave your pet's waste lying around. So what can you do to help?

When you are walking your dog, take along a plastic baggie to pick up the feces immediately and do not throw into the woods. Dispose of properly in your own trash container.

As a convenience, there are three Doggie Stations located throughout the neighborhood that contain baggies and a trash container.

Thank You
